Dr. Marion Hamm, M.A.

Marion Hamm is an ethnographer working at the interface of anthropology, media- and cultural studies. Currently, she is principal researcher in the international research project “Infrastructuring Libraries in Transformation” (ILIT ), which investigates the changing role of public libraries in urban space against the backdrop of austerity. Marion is interested in practices of meaning-making in urban, rural and mediated life-worlds. In her studies and teachings, she engages with social movements, politics of memory, mobilities, migration, precarisation, techno-sociality, and most recently with public libraries. Methodologically, she stands for an open, reflexive ethnographic approach, which is connected to visual, digital and media anthropology. She aims to practice participation between field and researcher as a mutual process. 

After completing vocational training in publishing, Marion studied modern European history, empirical cultural studies and cultural studies at the Universities of Tübingen and Birmingham. A grant by the German Historical Institute brought her to London, where she engaged with memory cultures amongst German-speaking Jewish Londoners. London remained her base until Brexit. 

Marion’s research interest in the concatenations of digital and corporeal practices goes back to her years as a media activist in the hybrid communication spaces of the alter-globalisation movement (1999 – 2007). Her ethnographic study “Performing Protest”  on media practices of the trans-urban European precarity movement, especially in Milan, Barcelona, Hamburg and London received the dissertation award of the University of Lucerne (2011). From 2013 to 2015, she coordinated the interdisciplinary PhD programme „Visual Cultures“ at the University of Graz und was visiting fellow at University College London.

As principal researcher in the Horizon 2020 project TRACES  at the University of Klagenfurt/Celovec, she studied the transmission of contentious cultural heritage with artistic means, especially in the rural border region in the Alps-Adriatic and in a multicultural London neighbourhood. (2016-2019). 

Marion participated in international networks on protest research and the research program for cultural studies of technology, discusses her research in the international conferences of SIEF, EASA and the German and Austrian professional organisations. She is a co-founder of the DGV commission digitality in the everyday of the association of German folklorists and a co-initiator of the innovative supervision group for fieldworkers in Tübingen.

    Since 1998, Marion has lectured at universities in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the UK and Spain. Visiting departments of sociology, anthropology, media studies and social psychology, she mainly teaches ethnographic methodology while picking up topical issues. Where possible, she applies the concept of research-based learning. At the universities of Graz and Klagenfurt, she supervised dissertations on BA and MA levels.
