Univ.-Prof. Dr. Alexa Färber

At the Institute for European Ethnology, Alexa Färber combines ethnographic analysis of everyday cultures with questions and approaches of the anthropology of knowledge. In the research fields of city, representational work and audio-visual research, she investigates the connection between city and promise, collaboration and project-based work practices, and develops different formats of publicizing in inter- and transdisciplinary contexts. These research and teaching foci are embedded in the perspective of the Professorship of Historical Dimensioning of Everyday Cultures, which she took up in 2018.

After studying Islamic Studies and European Ethnology in Hamburg, Toulouse and Berlin, she completed her PhD at the Institute for European Ethnology at HU Berlin. As a postdoc at HU Berlin and at the Seminar for European Ethnology/Folklore Studies at Christian-Albrechts University Kiel, as well as a junior professor at HU Berlin and professor at HafenCity University Hamburg, she has worked primarily conceptually in frequently inter- and transdisciplinary contexts (urban design, urban planning, architecture) and has further developed her knowledge anthropological work on "representational work" as collaborative design practice (2006, 2020, among others), published on ethnographic urban research and the "tangibility of the city" (2010), "low-budget urbanity" (2016), and city as "promissory assemblage" (2019).

In 2020, Alexa Färber initiated the transdisciplinary research project "Realfiction Klimarechnnungshof: Pre-enacting climate change knowledge" (FWF 1000-Ideas Program), which investigates the methodological potential of "real fiction" to shape social change. Since 2022, she is PI in the Horizon 2020 research project "Infrastructuring Libraries in Transformation" (Urban Europe, EUNTC). In the long-term study "Cultural Institutions and Urban Promises in Paris: Reconstructing, Traversing and Disrupting Polarizations", she investigates the urban entanglements of the Institut du monde arabe and the Institut des cultures d'islam in a historical-ethnographic perspective. Since 2010, she is a member of the French-German research network "Penser l'urbain par l'image" and runs the blog "talkingphotobooks.net".

  • Research Projects

    • Infrastructuring the Social: Public Libraries and their Transformative Capacity in Austerity Urbanism (ILIT)

      Public libraries are traditionally acknowledged as places for information provision and knowledge transmission. Other functions in urban everyday life have until recently been less prominent: The library as a freely accessible place for encounter, mutual learning and care. While libraries’ holistic role in urban everyday life increasingly appears on the radar of patrons, librarians and municipalities, this is heavily threatened by austerity pressures.

      “Infrastructuring Public Libraries” (ILIT) examines how public libraries in Austria, Sweden and the Netherlands address systemic challenges such as unemployment, loneliness and segregation in rapidly transforming societies. It deploys the analytics of ‘infrastructuring’ and ‘librarising’ to unpack the (in)formal practices whereby librarians, patrons, policy-makers and other concerned groups provide, perform and maintain public libraries as important socio-cultural infrastructures. The project is funded by ERA-NET Cofund Urban Transformation Capacities (5/2022-4/2025)

    • Cultural institutions and urban promises in Paris: Reconstructing, traversing and disrupting polarisations

      For some years now, I have been conceptually engaged with the relationship between the city and promises. I am interested in how promises "come into the world" and what they achieve - partly also how we can free ourselves from them. One starting point for empirically pursuing these questions from the perspective of urban and knowledge anthropology can be urban cultural institutions: Their foundations go back to certain interests, they have raised expectations and produced associated promises.
      The Institut du monde arabe (IMA) in Paris, for example, materialises the promise of modernity through its building, its role within the Grands Projets in the 1980s stands for the promises of urban transformation, its program constantly articulates new promises to represent "the" Arab world. By reconstructing the history of the IMA since its projection in the 1970s, I examine the historical conditions of these "promising situations", which are only partly cultural-political in nature. As a second, younger and urban cultural institution, I examine the Institut des cultures d'islam (ici). In addition to analysing documents, conversations and interviews, I am elaborating the spatial experience of this and other urban promises with mobil(ising) ethnographic methods of "itinéraires". These ethnographic walks are designed, on the one hand, to explore the potential connections between the IMA and the ici, such as the polarised social atmosphere. But they also digress, leaving space for the contingency of the urban experience. Exploring this messy situation provides the basis for interrogating the stably unstable binding power of promises. (Since 1998)
    • The research project Pre-enacting climate change knowledge (PECCK), funded by the FWF in the "1000 Ideas" programme, problematises the effects of the climate budget regime on climate change knowledge from the perspective of an Anthropology of knowledge. In a reflexive collaborative experiment, it employs speculative knowledge in an exploratory manner: Therefore, PECCK proposes to bring the demand of the Austrian climate referendum to life by pre-enacting a real-fictional climate court of audit.For this purpose, the project initiates and investigates workshops in which all fields of knowledge involved in the production of climate change knowledge are brought up for discussion. In addition, it is staging the transmission format "Real Fiction Climate Court of Audit". In the interplay of both formats, PECCK mobilises an approach that is anchored in the Anthropology of knowledge and that both mobilises as a concerted climate policy intervention and contributes to the understanding of how the future of climate change is imagined and responded to.In cooperation with the History of Science at University of Vienna and the Volkskundemuseum Wien for the transdisciplinary research initiative "Realfiktion Klimarechnungshof".
    • Translating Dwelling/Knowledge: Collective building and housing in Germany and Austria  (WohnWissen). In cooperation with Urban Design (HCU Hamburg) sponsored by the Hamburg Open Online University (HOOU). The project "WohnWissen" is dedicated to future-oriented case studies and practices of collective building and living in order to identify and translate their conditions for success. The project develops a teaching and learning platform that creates publicity for forward-looking models of collective building/housing and the associated context- and time-specific notions of community housing. Users of the platform are students and teachers of design and cultural/social science programs, as well as institutions, professionals and interested parties dealing with the topic of "collective housing and building". (2020-2022)
    • Penser l’urbain par l’image (PUI) is research network that brings together scholars and audio-visuel practioners that are research the city.     • Close-Up Marseille: The French Mediterranean metropolis of Marseille is repeatedly under pressure to transform. The social and cultural consequences of urban interventions, their historical roots and the associated projections for the future are the subject of cultural analytical studies, which are received in the long-term series of seminars and research excursions and supplemented by own research (2013, 2015, 2016, 2018, 2020 - cancelled due to Corona). In the workshops "What comes after the Capital of Culture? On the relationship between urban image and the imaginary in Marseille (Conference report)“ and "Marseille, laboratory of urban renewal (program)“, the exchange on the development of the city was deepened with colleagues from research, urban planning and design. (Since 2013)
