Centre-periphery processes in Greenland:
transforming Nuuk into an Arctic capital city

Greenland, a highly autonomous subnational island jurisdiction of Denmark, is the largest island in the world. Although this Arctic territory is peripheral relative to Denmark, Greenland's itself has a widely dispersed population and possesses difficult centre-periphery tensions. The capital city Nuuk (population 17,800) has developed into Greenland's centre of economic and administrative power, yet strong cultural and political forces are rooted elsewhere on the island. This presentation explores Nuuk's colonially inflected and contested status as a centre on the periphery.
