Val Meneau, Paris Lodron Universität Salzburg, Abteilung Musik- und Tanzwissenschaft:
Theories and methodology to analyse performative dancing bodies

Abstract:

Theories and methods for examining the performative body in dance

The lecture addresses the question of which research methods can be used to analyse the entanglement of power and the body. The body is considered both as an agent of power (Foucault and his microphysics of power) and as a surface on which the sedimentation of gender effects can be read (Butler). For my dissertation on the heteronormative gender binary in Latin DanceSport, however, these two approaches, widely used in gender studies, were not sufficient, as I had to investigate the performance of gender by bodies in movement. In order to understand the body as an interface between different and sometimes conflicting actors - the dancers themselves, the judges, the world and national federations, the trainers... - I designed a dispositive analysis in order to understand them. To that effect, I used a wide variety of sources and developed a triangulation between qualitative (expert) interviews, dance and movement analysis, discourse analysis and autoethnography.

Die Veranstaltung findet am Donnerstag, 18. April 2024 um 17 Uhr am Institut für Europäische Ethnologie, Hanuschgasse 3, 1010 Wien, Seminarraum 1  statt.
