Anthropological research on different spatial formations (urbanity, rurality, but also insularity, for example) is an important focus at the department of European Ethnology. The forum urban_land_scapes was initiated in 2019 in order to bring together different approaches in this field of research. It facilitates a constant exchange about the experiences, initiatives and projects of researchers at the department, but also aims to connect with other researchers and stakeholders outside the department.

The „studio audio-visual research“ consists of a group of researchers who compile empirical knowledge about the conditions, possibilities, and limits of multisenusal, audio-/visual practices. As in other areas of the empirical, cultural study of everyday life, the approach is defined by participation and observation, which means by audio-/visual participation and at the same time by the analyzation of past as well as present audio-visual practices of everyday life.

Because of the great significance of ethnographical fieldwork, researchers of the Department of European Ethnology founded the working group “Wiener Werkstatt Ethnographie”. The main concern of its members is to discuss fundamental questions of ethnographical research, to come to an understanding of current projects, and to facilitate a continuous, communicative exchange.
