Vortrag von John Durham Peters (ZOOM)

Am Donnerstag, 19.05.2022 findet im Rahmen des Institutskolloquiums "Wetter/Wissen: Kulturanalytische Perspektiven auf Zustände der Atmosphäre" folgender Vortrag statt:

John Durham Peters: How We Came to Picture Weather and Climate (ZOOM)

Abstract

The media processes by which weather and climate have come to be conceived and pictured constitute one of the central dramas of the modern world.  Looking at painterly, literary, and scientific representations, this talk tries to explain how we got to our current impasse in thinking about weather and climate.

John Durham Peters is María Rosa Menocal of English and Professor of Film and Media Studies at Yale and is the author of Speaking into the Air: A History of the Idea of Communication (1999), Courting the Abyss: Free Speech and Liberal Tradition (2005), The Marvelous Clouds: Toward a Philosophy of Elemental Media (2015), and Promiscuous Knowledge: Information, Image, and Other Truth Games in History (2020), co-authored with the late Kenneth Cmiel (all published by the University of Chicago Press). He taught for thirty years at the University of Iowa before moving to Yale and has advised or co-advised over three dozen doctoral dissertations, whose authors have all received academic positions. He has held extended visiting fellowships in England, Finland, Germany, Greece, the Netherlands, and Norway and lectured in many other countries.
